World War I lasted from 1914 to 1918 and devastated Europe. The war killed millions of people, destroyed farms and businesses, and weakened or ruined the economies of the European nations. The Treaty of Versailles, which ended World War I, blamed Germany for the war, and demanded that Germany pay the victors for the cost of the war. The German economy, already weakened, collapsed completely.
