After the brutal battle at Herrlisheim the Hellcats went to a rest camp near the French city of Strasbourg. There the division regrouped and replaced its losses in men and equipment. While recuperating from the Herrlisheim battle, the Hellcats came under the control of the First French Army on 22 January 1945.
